What Is Included in a Cake Smash Session?

Celebrating your baby’s first birthday is a major milestone, and a cake smash session is one of the most memorable ways to document it. If you are planning your little one’s big day, you might be wondering: what is included in a cake smash session?

When you book a session with a full-service portrait studio, you are receiving an all-inclusive, stress-free experience tailored around your child’s comfort. Here is an insider look at how a session flows, what we provide, and how we ensure beautiful portraits of your turning-one baby.

The Full-Service Studio Experience

One of the biggest concerns parents have is gathering supplies, building backdrops, and finding the right outfit while juggling life with a nearly one-year-old. When asking what is included in a cake smash session, the short answer is: absolutely everything you need.

Our studio is completely full service. We provide:

  • Session consultation call so we can plan the details
  • Custom backdrops and thematic decor designed around your vision
  • Styling props tailored to the setup
  • Outfits designed specifically for one-year-olds
  • A custom cake safely prepared for your baby to enjoy

You do not need to stress about hunting down props or picking up a photographer-friendly cake on the morning of your shoot. You simply bring your baby, and we take care of the rest.

How the Session Flows

We carefully pace a successful first birthday session to keep your baby happy, relaxed, and engaged We split the session into distinct parts to capture a variety of looks.

  • Warm-Up and Rug Time Play Time: studio environments and new faces can sometimes feel overwhelming to a little one. Before any cameras start clicking, every session begins with rug time play time. Mom, baby, and I sit on the floor together to play with blocks or small toys. This low-pressure interaction gives your baby time to warm up to me and get comfortable in the studio space. Building that initial trust is the secret to capturing genuine smiles later on.
  • Milestone Portraits: Before bringing out the messy cake, we start with clean milestone photos. This portion of the shoot focuses on documenting your baby just as they are at twelve months—climbing, pulling themselves up on props, and showing off their growing personality.
  • The Cake Smash: Once we have captured those timeless milestone portraits, we bring out the cake! We set it down and allow your baby to explore, taste, and smash it entirely at their own pace.

How We Handle Family and Sibling Photos

Protecting a one-year-old’s stamina is crucial. Pushing a baby through too many sets results in meltdown territory, which is why standard sessions focus strictly on the birthday baby.

However, if parents want family portraits included, we simply swap out the initial milestone portraits and capture family shots first before moving straight to the cake smash.

s a special touch, I love inviting parents to jump into the smash set at the very end and get messy with their baby. I gift these candid, joy-filled family photos to parents at no extra charge.

Pro Tips for Overcoming Cake Smash Challenges

Not every one-year-old dives headfirst into a cake, and that is completely normal! Here is how we navigate common bumps in the road during set time.

  • Traditional frosting’s thick, sweet texture actually overwhelms most babies. The moment it coats their fingers, they hold their hands up to a parent for a quick wipe and start to cry.
  • To prevent this, we use naked cakes with light frosting. My biggest piece of advice for parents is to practice at home: do not let the session be the first time your baby experiences cake or frosting! Give them a small cupcake or a taste of icing for a few days leading up to the photoshoot so the texture isn’t a shock.
  • If a baby still refuses to touch or eat the cake during the shoot, there is no need to panic. We keep favorite small snacks on hand—like puffs or cheerios—and tuck them directly into the back of the cake. When baby reaches in to grab their favorite treat, it creates the perfect illusion of them happily digging into their cake.
