The Minimalist Baby Registry: What You Actually Need

The Minimalist Baby Registry: What You Actually Need (And What to Skip)

Walking into a baby store or browsing an online registry site for the first time is a rite of passage. It usually goes like this: you feel a wave of excitement, followed immediately by a wave of sheer, unadulterated panic.

Do you really need a wipe warmer? Is a crystal-encrusted pacifier clip necessary? (Spoiler: no).

The baby industry is brilliant at making expectant parents feel like they need a million gadgets to keep a tiny human alive. But here is the honest truth: babies need surprisingly little at the beginning.

If you want to avoid clutter, save your loved ones money, and keep your sanity, here is the ultimate guide to “what do I actually need on my baby registry?”—you are not alone.

Newborns sleep a lot (just not always when you want them to). You’ll want a safe, dedicated space for them.

  • A Safe Sleep Space: A crib or a bassinet that meets current safety standards. If you are tight on space, a pack-and-play with a bassinet insert works beautifully and grows with them.

  • A Firm Mattress & Fitted Sheets: You only need 2–3 fitted sheets. Babies spit up and blow out; you just need enough to rotate when one is in the wash.

  • Swaddles or Sleep Sacks: Traditional swaddle blankets are great, but Velcro or zipper swaddles are absolute lifesavers at 3:00 AM when you’re too tired to do origami. Get 2–3 to start.

🚫 Skip It:

Crib bumpers, quilts, and pillows. They look cute in magazine photos, but they are safety hazards. Keep the crib completely bare.

You will change roughly 2,500 diapers in the first year alone. Let’s make it as seamless as possible.

  • Diapers: Don’t put too many “Newborn” size diapers on your registry—babies grow out of them in weeks. Register for mostly Size 1 and Size 2.

  • Wipes: Register for the bulk packs of unscented, sensitive wipes. You cannot have too many.

  • Diaper Rash Cream: Look for something with zinc oxide to create a good barrier.

  • A Portable Changing Pad: You don’t necessarily need a giant changing table. A simple, wipeable changing pad that you can throw on top of a dresser—or a fold-up pad for the living room floor—is perfect.

🚫 Skip It:

A wipe warmer. Not only do they dry out the wipes, but they can also grow bacteria. Plus, if your baby gets used to warm wipes at home, they will scream bloody murder when you use a cold wipe in a public restroom.

Whether you are breastfeeding, formula feeding, or doing a mix of both, you need the right tools.

  • Bottles: Register for a “variety pack” if possible. Babies are surprisingly picky about nipple shapes. Don’t buy a massive 12-pack of one brand until you know your baby likes it.

  • Burp Cloths: Buy these in bulk. The thick, cloth prefold diapers actually make the absolute best, most absorbent burp cloths.

  • A Breast Pump & Accessories: Check with your health insurance first, as many cover a pump for free! But you can register for accessories like extra parts, storage bags, and a nursing pillow.

🚫 Skip It:

A baby food maker. A regular household blender or food processor does the exact same thing once they start solids at six months.

4. Getting Around

You’ll need a way to transport your new favorite roommate safely.

ItemWhy You Need It
Infant Car SeatYou literally cannot leave the hospital without one. Look for safety ratings over aesthetics.
A StrollerMake sure it’s compatible with your car seat (many brands sell “travel systems” where they click together).
A Baby CarrierA wrap or a structured carrier is a lifesaver for “contact naps” and getting things done around the house while keeping baby close.

🚫 Skip It:

Shoes for newborns. They cannot walk. They will kick them off into the abyss of a grocery store aisle within five minutes. Stick to socks or footed pajamas.

Keeping baby clean and comfortable doesn’t require a mini spa.

  • A Basic Baby Tub: Something with a newborn sling or support so they don’t slip around.

  • Baby Wash & Lotion: Unscented is best for delicate newborn skin.

  • A Health/Grooming Kit: You’ll need a baby nail trimmer (electric files are amazing and prevent you from accidentally clipping their skin), a nasal aspirator (like the NoseFrida), and a digital thermometer.

The golden rule of baby clothes: Think about access.

  • Zipped Onesies/Footies: Zippered pajamas are the unofficial uniform of the fourth trimester. Avoid snaps at all costs unless you want to solve a logic puzzle in the dark during a midnight diaper change. Get a handful in Newborn and 0–3 month sizes.

The Ultimate Registry “Pro-Tip”

Add a “Fund” for the Big Stuff. Most modern registry sites (like Babylist or Amazon) allow you to create cash funds. Instead of asking for twenty small plastic toys you don’t have room for, create a “Diaper Fund”or a “Postpartum Meal Delivery Fund.” Your future, exhausted self will thank you.

The Bottom Line

When building your registry, focus on safety, sleep, and sanity. If an item doesn’t directly contribute to one of those three things, you can probably leave it off. You can always buy things later as the need arises!
