Safe Sleep for Infants: A Philadelphia Parent’s Guide
Here are 4 tips for Safe sleep practices for newborn babies. There are some great Philadelphia local resources to give you more reading content if needed.
1. The ABCs of Safe Sleep
A is for Alone: Your baby should always sleep in their own space (crib, bassinet, or pack-n-play). Keep the area “minimalist”—no pillows, quilts, bumper pads, or stuffed animals.
B is for Back: Always place your baby on their back for every sleep, including naps. Once they can roll both ways independently, they can choose their own position.
C is for Crib: Use a firm, flat sleep surface covered only by a fitted sheet.
2. Room Sharing vs. Bed Sharing
The AAP recommends room-sharing (but not bed-sharing) for at least the first six months. Keeping the bassinet within arm’s reach of your bed makes nighttime feedings easier and is proven to decrease the risk of SIDS by up to 50%.
3. Climate Control: The Philly “Sweet Spot”
Philadelphia homes—especially our beautiful historic row homes—can be tricky to regulate.
Temperature: Aim for 68–72°F.
Avoid Overheating: If your baby is sweating or their chest feels hot to the touch, they are overdressed. A wearable blanket (sleep sack) is the safest way to provide warmth without the danger of loose blankets.
