How Far Along Should I Be for Maternity Photos?

How Far Along Should I Be for Maternity Photos?

When you find out you are expecting, your mind immediately jumps to a million milestones: nursery planning, baby showers, and capturing this incredible season of your life. But one of the most common questions mamas ask me is about timing:”how far along should I be for maternity photos?

As a fine-art maternity photographer, I want to make sure you look radiant, feel comfortable, and leave with portraits you will cherish forever. Here is everything you need to know about timing your session, handling last-minute bookings, and making sure you look and feel your best.

The ideal timeline for scheduling your maternity photoshoot is between 32 and 36 weeks.

This window is the sweet spot for a few key reasons:

  • Beautiful bump definition: By 32 weeks, your belly has popped into that perfect, round shape that looks incredible on camera.

  • Energy levels: You are still feeling good and have plenty of energy to move through different poses and outfit changes.

  • Maximum comfort: After 36 weeks, your body naturally starts to swell more, fatigue sets in, and sitting or standing for long periods becomes noticeably uncomfortable.

  • Avoiding a early delivery surprise: Booking too close to your due date risks missing your window altogether if baby decides to make an early appearance!

If you shoot too early in your pregnancy, your belly might not show as clearly on camera. Waiting past 36 weeks often means navigating significant physical discomfort. Stick to that 32 to 36 week window whenever possible for the best experience.

While 32 to 36 weeks is my golden rule, there are always exceptions. Every pregnancy is unique, and we adjust the timeline based on your specific body and medical needs.

  • If you are expecting twins or triplets, or if you have been placed in a high-risk category, we will schedule your session earlier—typically around 24 to 28 weeks. Multiples grow quickly, and moms carrying twins tend to show earlier and feel ready for rest much sooner.
  • If this is not your first baby, your body often pops earlier than it did with your first. If you are showing sooner and feeling ready, we can easily shift your shoot up by a few weeks.
  • This is exactly why I hold an in-depth consultation call with every client before we set anything in stone. We have an open, honest conversation about how your body is feeling, how your pregnancy is progressing, and what timeline makes the most sense for you.

Booking Timeline: When to Lock In Your Date

Because the 32 to 36 week window is so specific, planning ahead is critical. My studio schedule typically fills up three months in advance.

To secure your spot, you should contact and book your photographer during the start of your second trimester.

  • Reaching out around week 12 to 14 gives us plenty of time to secure a date in your prime window, start planning your wardrobe, and tailor the experience to your vision.
  • Life happens, and sometimes mamas reach out at 37 or 38 weeks hoping to squeeze in a last-minute session.
  • While weekends book out months in advance and schedule constraints do not always allow for every last-minute request, I always do my best to accommodate flexible schedules.
  • If we do schedule a session late in your pregnancy, we make key adjustments to protect your comfort:

Philadelphia Studio Environment Over Outdoor Locations

For late-pregnancy shoots, I always recommend a controlled studio setting. Studio sessions allow us to control the climate, offer easy seating, and take breaks as often as you need.  We book early in the morning so we can capture you while you are feeling your absolute best, before late-day swelling and tiredness set in.

Taking Our Time and Providing Care During your Maternity Session

I recently had a mom reach out at the last minute who was desperate to capture her bump before baby arrived. She had a flexible schedule, so we made it work! During her session, we took frequent rest breaks. I keep snacks stocked in the studio, so when her blood sugar dipped, we took a pause for chocolate granola bars. We moved slowly, extended our time on set, and strictly focused on poses that made her feel safe, supported, and relaxed.

Overcoming Insecurities: Seeing Yourself Through My Lens

If you are on the fence about booking a session because you are feeling insecure about your changing body, please know that almost every expecting mother feels this way at some point.

Most moms are not feeling like themselves, and it is completely normal to feel self-conscious about weight gain, swelling, or skin changes. But I encourage you to try seeing yourself through my lens.

When you book a session with us:

  • We pamper you: Professional hair and makeup artist services are provided to give you an instant, foundational confidence boost before you even step into a dress.

  • We provide the wardrobe: You do not need to shop for clothes that fit a changing body. We explore our designer client closet together to find silhouettes that flatter you effortlessly.

  • We customize the posing: If you have specific insecurities, we talk about them openly before the session. My job is to guide you into poses that celebrate your beauty and hide the areas you feel uncertain about—never highlight them.
